Reimagining Cultural Transport as a Living Canvas
What happens when an iconic paint brand stops treating surfaces as mere wallboard and starts listening to the ancient pulse of a region? One gets floating art and a vibrant, breathing narrative drifting across the quiet waters of Srinagar’s Dal Lake. In a noisy world where digital ads are swiped away in seconds, true brand connection is not built by shouting louder. It is built by anchoring to cultural roots. A profound example of this heritage-first visual revolution is Asian Paints’ Aks-e-Kashmir project, brought to life alongside the St+art India Foundation and XXL Collective. By gently transforming 40 iconic wooden shikaras into living canvases, the initiative reimagines traditional watercraft into dynamic, travelling museums that preserve and celebrate Kashmir’s rich artistic legacy.
For generations, shikaras have been the beating heart of Dal Lake, carrying quiet stories, daily routines, local trade and wide-eyed wanderers across the water. Instead of imposing generic corporate messaging onto these historic vessels, Asian Paints chose to honour their soul, shifting from top-down advertising to an authentic cultural tribute. A diverse collective of visual artists, including Owais Ahmed, Sheehij Kaul, Zahra Javed and Shweta Sharma, immersed themselves in local traditions to design each boat. Every strokes-filled hull echoes deep regional folklore: intricate Aari and Sozni embroidery patterns, delicate geometric woodwork, regional fauna and the poetic nostalgia of 16th-century mystic Habba Khatoon. This transformation goes far beyond surface-level aesthetics, honouring both the craft and the craftsman. The design team meticulously curated every single element of the ride to complement Kashmir’s natural beauty. Specially engineered wood finishes were applied to protect the boats against aquatic weathering while preserving the raw, warm wood tones crafted by local artisans. Stepping aboard feels like entering a tactile sanctuary, as handpicked local textiles drape the interior upholstery and canopies, wrapping passengers in an immersive heritage experience as they glide silently across the water. By reviving public heritage assets much like their prior homage to Kolkata’s iconic yellow taxis, Asian Paints reinforces its role not just as a paint manufacturer, but as a dedicated custodian of local identity.
Expanding Beyond the Water: Roots in the Community
The artistic footprint didn’t remain confined to the lake. It took root directly on land to inspire the next generation. As part of the 10th edition of Asian Paints’ “Donate A Wall” initiative, the team painted a massive 11,500-square-foot public mural across the Kashmir University campus. By allowing a deliberate space to traditional symbols in an educational landmark, the project embeds regional pride into the daily lives of local students, leaving a permanent cultural gift in the heart of Srinagar.
Strategic Lessons for Brands and The Power of Cultural Grounding
At the end, Aks-e-Kashmir serves as a masterclass in how modern brands can build lasting reverence by honouring local roots. True brand resonance is not achieved by pushing corporate templates, but by stepping back to uplift the native artistic vernacular of a community. When a brand transforms functional everyday utility objects like local boats into celebrated art pieces, it turns everyday citizens into proud brand storytellers. By weaving local history, poetry, rooted practises and craftsmanship into its identity, Asian Paints proves that when one help culture thrive, the brand equity takes care of itself.
