The Assam government has announced a cash reward of ₹30 lakh for boxer Lovlina Borgohain in recognition of her silver medal performance at the recently concluded Glasgow Commonwealth Games. State Sports Minister Biswajit Daimary made the announcement during a felicitation ceremony organized by the Assam Amateur Boxing Association (AABA) in Guwahati. The state government praised the athlete for consistently bringing honor to the state and country on international platforms.
With this Commonwealth silver in the 75-kg category, Borgohain has achieved a historic milestone in Indian sports history. She is now the first and only athlete from Assam to secure medals across all four major multi-sport and global championship events like the Olympic Games, the World Championships, the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games. Her recent success in Glasgow reinforces her standing as one of the most decorated sportspersons to emerge from the region. In addition to individual recognition, the state government announced an annual allocation of ₹12 lakh to the Lovlina Borgohain Boxing Academy located in North Guwahati. This financial backing fulfills a direct request from the boxer to strengthen grass-roots training infrastructure, ensuring emerging talent in Assam receives proper support to compete at elite levels. As part of a broader push for sports infrastructure, the government also handed over an indoor sports facility in Rani to the boxing federation, alongside outdoor fields in Rani and Dhakuakhana to the Assam Football Association.
Expressing her gratitude to the Assam government and sports bodies, Borgohain acknowledged the prompt assistance provided for her academy and reflected on her ongoing journey in international boxing. The felicitation program saw participation from across the state’s athletic community, with representatives from the Assam Olympic Association, Assam Football Association, Assam Weightlifting Association, Assam Sepak Takraw Association and Assam Kho Kho Association joining prominent sports officials, including AABA President Siddhartha Bhattacharya and AABA General Secretary Hemanta Kumar Kalita, to honour her achievements.
