In a major executive reshuffle, Google parent Alphabet Inc. has announced a sweeping leadership restructuring across its flagship artificial intelligence division, Google DeepMind. The organisational changes, detailed in an internal memo to employees from Google CEO Sundar Pichai, mark a strategic shift in how the tech giant manages its operational execution alongside long-term research on artificial general intelligence. Under the new structure, DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis transitions into a top-level Alphabet strategy role, Chief Technology Officer Koray Kavukcuoglu steps up to manage day-to-day operations and legendary computer scientist Jeff Dean exits the company after nearly three decades to launch an independent venture.
Demis Hassabis, who has led DeepMind since co-founding the AI research lab, is stepping out of daily management to assume the newly created dual role of Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet. Pitching the transition as a long-discussed move, Pichai explained that the elevated position allows Hassabis to dedicate his full attention to actively shaping the future of AGI, addressing macro-level scientific strategy and driving broader policy discussions. In addition to advising across Google’s model development and research pipelines, Hassabis will continue leading Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet’s AI-driven drug discovery spin-off. Stepping into operational command, Koray Kavukcuoglu has been promoted to Senior Vice President of Google DeepMind and will now report directly to Sundar Pichai. Kavukcuoglu, a 13-year veteran of the lab who previously served as Chief Technology Officer and Chief AI Architect, started DeepMind’s early deep learning teams and spearheaded influential breakthroughs such as WaveNet and Deep Q-Networks. In his expanded capacity, Kavukcuoglu will directly oversee the rapid deployment and scaling of the Gemini model suite, frontier AI research and the management of both the consumer Gemini app and developer ecosystem. Meanwhile, Jeff Dean, Google’s Chief Scientist and a foundational figure who joined the company 27 years ago, is leaving to start a new independent public benefit corporation named Discovery Loop alongside longtime collaborator and Google Senior Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat. Having helped build Google’s early core search architecture and the neural networks that laid the groundwork for modern machine learning, Dean and Ghemawat’s new entity aims to accelerate scientific discovery through advanced ML systems. Alphabet plans to maintain close ties with the pair, serving as a founding investor and cloud partner while collaborating on foundational machine learning research frameworks.
The executive alignment underscores Google’s intent to maintain velocity in a highly competitive AI landscape while maintaining momentum across its product lineup. The announcements follow strong commercial performance for Alphabet’s AI stack, highlighted by its lightweight Gemma models topping 900 million downloads, expanding developer adoption of the Gemini Flash model and the flagship Gemini application surpassing 950 million monthly active users.
